Vasilis Komytis

With parents from Nafplion and Naxos, Vasilis was born under the first water sign of the zodiac, and as a child forged a close relationship with the sea. During his long walks he records images, thoughts and moments which combine joy and sorrow and he recycles. Woodcarvings with an underlying theme of boats act as his guide and life compass, and are in harmony with the human mind. Inanimate components around him (wood, iron, cloth) become a promise, an expression, a question… ‘Useless’ objects retain the essential elements of their matter, which, when interconnected with pieces of the same or a different composition, form new creations, thus maintaining perpetual existence. His motto is: ‘I prefer the imperfection of nature to artificial inferiority.’
